Dr. Gail Cooper is the Director of Forensic Toxicology at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in NYC. She received her MSc and PhD from the University of Glasgow. She has been working in the field of forensic toxicology for 20 years and is regularly called as an expert witness. Dr. Cooper is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU and John Jay College where she teaches medical students, residents, and forensic science students. She has published 30 papers in forensic and toxicology journals, and has co-edited a forensic toxicology textbook. Dr. Cooper has lectured internationally on forensic toxicology.
Dr. Cooper's presentation will provide a short overview of the Department of Forensic Toxicology within the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. As the first forensic toxicology laboratory in the United States, we celebrated our centennial in 2018. As the oldest and one of the largest forensic toxicology laboratories in the country, we receive approximately 6,500 cases annually, the majority being postmortem cases but we also receive cases involving impaired drivers and drug facilitated crimes. The challenges facing forensic toxicologists are markedly different in 2020 to those of our predecessors from the past century. She will present different case studies to demonstrate the varied work the office receives and how the advancements in technology allow the department to best serve the City of New York.

See below some testimonials from our members:
“Vinny Funaro was a great man, who I was privileged to know for 45 years. Vinny was always willing and able to do whatever we needed at the OCME. In addition to being an excellent dental consultant and outstanding tour commander during 9/11, Vinny was a good teacher. Whether he was running his Brooklyn forensic dental program, helping with the forensic medicine program at the Manhattan office, or assisting me when I was teaching at the police academy, Vinny was always an enthusiastic and important contributor. During my tenure as Chief Dental Consultant Vinny was the most loyal and responsible of all the dental consultants. I could always rely on him to do the right thing. On a personal note he was a wonderful and true friend... In short they don't make men like Vinny anymore. I will miss him greatly. My deepest sympathies to his family...............Jeff Burkes former Chief Dental Consultant to Office of Chief Medical Examiner...”
"NYSFD’s only Member Emeritus: Dr. Vincent Funaro
Vinnie’s enthusiasm for people and forensics was unprecedented, which is why he was such a great teacher, mentor and friend. Vinnie often told me one of the greatest days in his life was when he got involved in forensics. I often wondered if the TV show “Quincy” ( starring Jack Klugman ) was modeled after Vinnie. He always joked about calling himself Quincy. He welcomed me with guidance and support when I became Dental Chief at OCME. What a great person to have on your team. He was revered by his peers and students. His unique personality, knowledge, and sense of humor will certainly be missed. His longtime friend, Larry Dobrin."
